Trivia Tuesday: Cake

by Sammi Dittloff on July 10th, 2007

Thus far, a Trivia Tuesday has never been harder. There aren’t any websites I could find that had a list of trivia, so all these facts were hunted down and compiled by yours truly. Hopefully this makes it better, but let me know what you think!

  • It’s been mentioned that Cake has the same characteristics as such artists and bands as They Might Be Giants, The Cars, Talking Heads, Soul Coughing, and Camper Van Beethoven. If you are really into Cake, you should probably give some of these guys a listen as well.

  • There was some switching of members before Cake became the band we know now. For example, Gabe Nelson had replaced bass player Vince Damiani in 1997, and Xan McCurdy replaced guitarist Greg Brown in 1998.
  • Their fifth album, Pressure Chief, was featured on an episode of NPR’s Fresh Air in February 2005 with Teri Gross. (By the way, if you don’t listen to Fresh Air, it’s a cool podcast by NPR, give it a listen!)
  • Cake’s first three records were recorded with Capricorn Records, the next two with Columbia Records, and all from now on are to be recorded with their own label, Upbeat Records.
  • Weird Al’s song, “Close But No Cigar” on his CD Straight Outta Lynwood, parodies Cake’s style. This album was released in 2006.
  • McCrea actually helped Ben Folds up on background vocals on Rockin’ the Suburbs for the song “Fred Jones Part 2.” He also came to sing it for a live album that Folds was recording.
  • Greg Brown, Victor Damiani, and Todd Roper, all former members of Cake, are all in a band called Deathray.

I found most of the trivia on Wikipedia, but not in its own trivia section. If you have any more trivia to add for this Trivia Tuesday, post a comment! You can always email me at blog52bands@yahoo.com for anything!
