Tour Dates: The Strokes

This tour date section, sadly, is destined to be empty. At this point in time, The Strokes have no plans to play anywhere. I’ve been on their website, their MySpace, nothing. Sure, there are theories spinning around as to why this would happen, but what can you believe? Here are some reason why The Strokes may not be touring currently. Keep in mind, these are simply my musings, nothing about this is verified fact, but read these and think for yourself, I suppose…
- Albert Hammond, Jr.: Let’s see….guitarist of an “overnight success”-type band decides that after releases of three different albums that he wants to try his hand at going solo. To the naked eye, this has “break up” written all over it. However, there is a lot of proof that the band is still really close and that Hammond has no intention of leaving, no matter how successful his solo act goes. Also, his style is so different from that of The Strokes that there’s really no direct or clear competition, which would make this a much more hostile type of move. I think the only way that this could be the reason that The Strokes aren’t doing shows right now is because Hammond is so busy…so it’s more of an inadvertent hiatus than anything.
- Fizzling Out?: Now, a lot of people argue that no album of The Strokes could ever equal Is This It?, and really, this is not unique to this specific band. A lot of groups and artist have trouble getting past a runaway hit of a first album, only to return with a sophomoric attempt that nobody can see as good, since it doesn’t equal the original sound. This is undoubtedly a curse on most bands, and almost makes it better to slowly rise to fame than shoot like a rocket like this group of New York boys have done. Many fans complain that The Strokes have lost that “Oomph” that they had on their first record, although I disagree with this sentiment. I do feel that Room on Fire, their second CD, was a little bit weak, although there are songs on there that I love above many on Is This It?, like the song “Reptilia,” which is totally great in its own right and could have carried that album on its own. First Impressions of Earth, their third album, was even better in some respects than Is This It? It was more polished but still had that rough quality, there was more than one sound being offered on the album, yet there were still some that fans could attribute to that first album sound. If fizzling out is the reason, the band doesn’t have enough confidence in themselves. They have the power to go as far as they want to.
- A New Album?: All I have to say is, I wish. This would be the best reason of all for the delay in playing shows. If only I could believe it. If I hear anything, I’ll post it here as soon as I can!
