Songs of Note: The Format

by Sammi Dittloff on November 11th, 2007

Nate Ruess: Good. Songs of Note Day: Better.

This section was honestly too much fun for me to write this time, because I love all the music from The Format, especially the stuff from their CD, Dog Problems, which is where I put my focus for today’s blog. Feel free to post your favorites from this or other albums, because sharing is fun. We learned that back in preschool, and yes, it still applies, so post away!!

  • Dog Problems: Oh yeah. This song, like I said probably conservatively a MILLION times, was the reason I started listening to The Format. Actually, Chris Cullari over at Killed By the Video Star was the person that re-reminded me of how much I loved this song. He even sent a CD my way, so yeah, he rules, and is the reason for me posting this right now. There’s something about this song, that after 50+ plays, is still not annoying to me. Honestly. Part of it is maybe the swinging cabaret, jazzy beat that’s in most of it. Maybe it’s because I can picture hands singing it, thanks to the awesomeness that was the music video. Maybe it’s that one section of lyrics that always gets me: “B is for believing you’ll always be here for me/E is for everything, even when we see it through/C, c is for seeing through you, you are a fake which brings me to/A, because because you always run away.” So good. It’s like a cheer, but not. Such a happy-go-lucky song with crazy negative lyrics about not trusting someone. It’s irresistible. I freaking love this. Yes. I do.
  • She Doesn’t Get It: “Suddenly between sheets and eyelids, I am reminded why I don’t do this/I fall in love far too quickly/I never want her to forget me/When you’re gone/Will you call?/Will you write?” When I hear this song, I think about someone who wanted to have a fling, something just to play around with this girl, and that she didn’t get what he wanted from her. She’s telling him that she had to leave on a Sunday, and he had one more night with her, but he didn’t care because he just wanted her just then, or so he thought. Then he fell in too deep, and he feels like he needs to be with her all the time. She’s still in the shallow stage, and he was “the only one who got burned.” Basically, I like this song for the sheer sound of it, but also the lyrics, because I’ve totally been there. Hate to say it, but….I’ve totally been there.
  • Oceans: Maybe I’m wrong, but this song sounds to me like a tale about sell-outs. “Aw you’ve got flaws/That you won’t admit/Yet you tell me it’s a sin/That I don’t believe in/Yet you traded in your cross/For a chance to dance with stars/And now nothing is sacred.” Although she did something that he’s not okay with, her hiding her feelings and going to the land of Hollywood (keep in mind these are just my thoughts on the song), he still misses her, and wants to be with her. He says that she is “somewhere in the sand” and he wishes he “was an ocean” so that they can be together again. He also hopes for her happiness, so while she is far away and he may not get to see her, he wants to know that she’s in an okay place. It’s hard to say goodbye, especially for something you may not totally agree with, but if they’re happy, that’s the best you can really hope for, right? I’ve always hoped that.

Well, that’s about it for The Format. I hope you enjoyed this week. Daphne Willis is tomorrow, with an interview, so get excited!!!
