Songs of Note: Stars

by Sammi Dittloff on April 15th, 2008

  •  The First Five Times: This is a song that describes the first five times that a couple had sex. It’s awesome for that reason alone. All of them sound like adventurous and potentially awkward/fun ways of having sex as well, which adds to the entertainment factor of the song. The switch comes during the fifth time, when the girl stops him and says, “I know, I know I know, I feel the same as you.” And, as the song goes after that, “And every day it’s changed since then.” So really, it’s not about sex at all, but about falling in love. I can hear the “Awws” coming through your monitors to mine right now.
  • Calendar Girl: This is the first song that really enchanted me with Stars. Such a delicate voice coming through with such delicate words. “If I am lost for a day try to find me/But if I don’t come back then I won’t look behind me/All of the things that I thought were so easy/Just get harder and harder each day.” Sure, maybe a little bit of a downer, but you really want to find that girl, you want to hope that her entire calendar year is full of joy, although you know that’s not possible for a single person living on this planet. That’s what’s tricky about a year. No month is the same.
  • Celebration Guns: “And so tomorrow there will be another number/For the one who had a name.” Could that be any truer now in this time of war? It’s like, we look at things as random casualties when there’s been so much destruction, on both sides and on the innocent as well. Very very sad. Very very piercing when you add a female voice. Not that I’m biased or anything…
