Songs of Note: Roster McCabe

I apologize for this taking so much time. It’s been a busy and life-changing weekend, and not to go too much into my personal life, but on Friday night I made a decision that’s going to change my major and school eventually. So, yeah, there’s my half-assed apology, although, there is no excuse to ignore Roster McCabe. So, without further ado, I bring you Songs of Note…
- Night Phoenix: I thought I’d mention this song first since it’s the only instrumental track on Roster McCabe’s The Rhythm/The Elements. It’s got a traditional jazz vibe, with tons of energy, and also the instrumental solos that are characteristic of jazz music, although they’re shortened by quite a bit compared to what you’d hear in a jazz club or the like. What I really like about this song is how easy it is to listen to. It’s something that would be great to wake up to on a Sunday morning where you’re just going to be around the house, but maybe need motivation to clean or something. It’s also one of those good car soundtrack songs, that could accompany a trip to a restaurant with a bunch of your girlfriends after a hard day at work. I hope that explains it well enough for you, because sometimes I have a hard time explaining things if I don’t explain where I’d listen to them. If after listening to “Night Phoenix,” you think you’d listen to it somewhere else, post it here!
- See You Soon: I think that this is a great pick for the first track of the album, no doubt. This is really a great example of the “funk” sound that Roster McCabe has, and the lyrics are also great. I’m not sure how to interpret them, actually, but I’d either take them as “I’ve done something really bad to the girl I love but I promise to make it up to her,” or maybe something like, “I haven’t been feeling like myself lately so I’m going to be careful so I don’t hurt your feelings, and the best way to do that is to get away for a while.” Anyway, here are some of the lyrics so you can interpret it for yourself: “Hold tight I’m spinning/From the things/I’ve been thinking/And I don’t want/To make you feel that way/So take me away/Take me home/From all those things/I know I’ve done wrong/Million places I could be but I’m/Sitting dreaming of you.” So yeah, I guess take it how you will and get back to me.
- The Traveler: So, what I tried to do with this list was capture the different sounds of Roster McCabe, because they are all really good styles and I appreciate them for different reasons. In “The Traveler,” you can take in more of the reggae sound that the band covers, and although the lyrics of the song are a little more straightforward and traditional, the music brings it forward. It’s really a song about a journey or a quest, where someone is struggling to make it through, which is undoubtedly one of the oldest stories in existence, but it’s always good to hear it again. It’s a great song, very “one with nature”-y, and inspirational, talking about how to keep moving.
So, yeah, here are my favorites, and please, don’t be shy to share yours! All it takes is a comment!

Even though I completely agree, I have to add my absolute favorite Roster McCabe song– I heard “Footsteps” played live the first time I ever saw the band, and absolutely fell in love. It combines everything I love about roster mccabe into one song– you can hear hints of dave matthews band, a little bit jam band, and absolutely fantastic jazz in the background. Props to Sammi for covering such an awesome band!
