Songs of Note: Rilo Kiley

Long overdue, but my songs of note are here! Huzzah! Here are some songs I think are really worth checking out for some reason or another….
- Science vs. Romance: This song has not been on my iTunes list for very long, but already it’s one of my most played songs. You wanna know why? It’s insanely catchy, plus like really angsty/ironic/wistful. All of Rilo Kiley’s songs are so razor-sharp with their lyrics, but soft in the delivery. It’s what I love so much about them. Take the opening line for example: “I used to think/If I would realize I’d die/Then I would be/A lot nicer/Used to believe/In a lot more/Now I just see/Straight ahead.” Pretty sad, maybe even bordering on “emo,” but to avoid this, you have the perfect song to go along with it. She’s like sad and pissed off, but keeping a happy face on, like so many women do. It’s a great song, what can I say?
- The Frug: Another one of my most-played songs. No lie, I originally got interested in the song because of its title. I was in the musical “Sweet Charity” and there was a dance number called “The Frug” so I had to give this a listen to see if it was anything like it. It wasn’t, but that’s okay, because the song rocks anyway. She lists a lot of dances that she can do, but she says things like “I cannot fall in love,” in the middle of it. It’s really fun, clappy, catchy once again, but then there are sad parts and almost masochistic talks of doing things for someone that she knows won’t totally love her. Sadness behind a veil of fun.
- A Better Son/Daughter: This is the first Rilo Kiley song I ever heard, and it totally blew me away, partly because the “F-bomb” is exploding at a quite frequent rate after about a minute and a half of play. It starts kind of with a fight between a mother and a daughter, that odd love-hate relationship so many of us have with our parents. It’s a good song, a little differently paced from the other two songs I mentioned, so a good other side to Rilo Kiley’s sound.
