Songs of Note: Man Man

- Engrish Bwudd: I’m pretty sure I’ve already talked about this song way too much, but it is my favorite thing Man Man ever came out with. Maybe it’s partly due to the fact I was so obsessed with fairy tales as a kid. I mean, come on, you hear “Fee Fi Fo Fum” in a song and it takes you right back to good ol’ Mother Goose days. Like I mentioned before, this was one of the songs featured on Weeds, just adding to its coolness. Plus, it was the first song my friend Rusty picked out for me to listen to when he was exposing me to the wonderfulness of Man Man, and I recognized it right away. My favorite part of this song? The wee bit o’ scatting that’s going on in the background right before each chorus. I’m not sure why, it just gets me right there, in the beatmaker.
- Doo Right: It’s a doo-wop imitation song. Do I really need to say more? You’ve got that traditional 4-chord old-school pop sound, the piano, the works, man. Plus, it starts with fireworks. What better way to say Americana? “I just can’t remember/January straight through December/My collective memories are in shambles/And so are my scruples/I’m outside your window/Throwing bricks at the moon.” I’m not sure why, but this song just makes me think of the movie Crybaby, and that’s only another reason to love it more. Short and sweet, this song eases my craving for rockabilly and doo-wop whilst listening to something oh-so-indie-prominent.
- Ice Dogs: This is the last song I’m gonna talk about, but not even close to the end of my list of favorite Man Man songs. This is just the one I’ve been listening to the most in the past couple days, so I thought I’d bring it up. I like singing this one and pretending that I have a gruff voice. It works after a cold, but that’s pretty much it. Anyhow, this song is right before “Engrish Bwudd” on a Man Man mix CD I made for mi coche, so that’s how I started going about listening to it. It’s on Six Demon Bag, it’s high quality, so check ‘er out! And again, there’s a little doo-woppy part near the end of the song, gotta love it! I feel like I’m listening to Grease or Hairspray or something equally filled with innuendo.
