Songs of Note: Ludo

  • Ode to Kevin Arnold: I don’t know about any of you, but when I was growing up, Wonder Years was the ultimate. I loved that show, and I never missed it. Oh, that cute Fred Savage, with an adult voice of Daniel Stern. And who could forget the theme song, With A Little Help From My Friends, sung by Joe Cocker. Ahh, those were the simpler days. How I long to go back to the days when all it took was a smile from Winnie Cooper to raise my spirits. But alas, things are more complicated now, and there’s all that reality television nonsense and celebrity gossip and………oh man, am I starting to sound like my parents? Geez, well, that’s what this song brings out in me, I guess. It’s just a cry back to when things seemed to make a lot more sense. “I’m watching Kevin Arnold’s Wonder Years/Tearfully nostalgic for them days, back in ‘69/When the world was all just me and Paul/Playing football in the street/And Winnie Cooper was my love.” You can never go back, kids, but you’ll always have reruns.
  • Good Will Hunting By Myself: A couple things with this one. Number one, my favorite actor for years and years was Matt Damon. A talented heartthrob, who can ask for more, right? Number two, Good Will Hunting is an awesome movie with a lot of talented people, and it’s romantic but not sappy enough that you can get your boyfriend to watch it no problem. “Girl, I remember when we were sittin’ on your couch. Watchin’ Good Will Hunting. Holding hands and drinking milkshakes. But milkshakes melt, people change, and you dumped me on my birthday. Right after I bought you that…” and the song goes on from here to basically rant about how he’s happy that he’s not with her anymore, but “happy in a crying sort of way,” so he’s at that wishing revenge on her for breaking his heart stage but looking for anything bad about her to keep him going. It’s a great angry and funny song, good for when you just feel like ranting but have nothing to rant about. With this song, you’ve got a script. Watch the music video, too, because it’s way too funny.
  • Save our City: Basically, for Broken Bride, it’s way better to listen to the whole album straight through, but I really like this song on its own. It can definitely hold up as a story, and I don’t know, there’s something about the melody that’s really catchy. Maybe it’s something about singing about zombies, or a mission of a simple man to save an entire city, but it’s just a great way to spend six and a half minutes. (Especially when they get all manly and low in the bridge and talk about so much blood, it can’t be considered anything but the epitome of bravery and manliness). It’s really hard to know when to take this song seriously and when to not. The chorus also reminds me of something I’ve heard in Rent, and I really like Rent, so that’s a good thing.
