Songs of Note: Juliette and the Licks

by Sammi Dittloff on February 19th, 2008

  •  You’re Speaking My Language: Ugh, this song just has “rock” written all over it. I have such great admiration for a band that just gets back to the basic. Yes, there’s a special place in my heart for indie music, but there’s nothing better than getting to the point, shouting out some words, and wearing almost nothing at all on stage while having a powerhouse voice and body. “I know you think you know me better than that/I beat your dog ‘cuz he hit on my cat/I wipe my face off and give your kisses back, baby.” This alone is like a “Do not mess with me” anthem. The world does not have enough strong female fronts. This is the first Licks song I heard, and I just got hooked. It doesn’t get much better than this song. Seriously, to every woman reading this, you will feel totally empowered, but not in an annoying “bitchy” way or anything like that. You’ll like it, I promise.
  • Bullshit King: To be honest, I picked this song because I have dealt with too many of these in my life thus far and I wish that I didn’t. Juliette puts it all very eloquently: “He’s a bullshit king and he dwells in his cave/He’ll tell you pretty things just to make you behave/He knows the tricks of his trade/He’s got all his toys on parade.” Like I said, she’s great because she’s to-the-point and brutally honest. This is not the kind of guy I ever want to go for again, and it’s a good song to remind me of this if I ever fall into a trap, I suppose. This goes for all girls, totally.
  • By The Heat of Your Light: I like this song because it’s a change of pace from a lot of the Licks music. And it’s like a love song, but not mushy, but still really relaxing and really beautiful. I love the line, “Come rock me to sleep by the heat of your light.” It’s such an amazing line. I’m not sure what else to say about this song, it just makes me really happy when I hear it, but I don’t feel guilty because I’m not listening to something totally sappy, you know?
