Songs of Note: Jack Johnson

by Sammi Dittloff on March 20th, 2008

  • If I Had Eyes: So, this the newest single by Jack Johnson, and it’s pretty awesome, I must say. It still has that slow, chill, Hawaiian surfer on vacation vibe, but at the same time, it’s got a more driving beat, if you can call it driving, I mean, I’m not talking powerpop, but I’m sure you get the idea, than a lot of his other songs. Some songs like “Banana Pancakes” have more of a lazy feel to them, but this keeps going all the way through. A lot of critics have called Johnson’s newest CD a bit darker than his other albums, and maybe that’s true, and this song is pretty certain to be the best indicator of the mood switch. Still, I don’t know, there’s something about Jack Johnson where I don’t think a song could ever be….dark. Not in the way that you think of when you look at the musical spectrum. Still, it’s not as happy as songs on the Curious George album, that’s for sure.
  • Upside Down: I dare you to listen to this song and not smile. It’s exactly what I’d like to listen to with my own kids some day when we’re just inside on a rainy day baking cookies or something. It’s exactly what I picture. It’s funny, because I’ll see that or a sunny day outside by the pool. One or the other. Anyway, it’s really sweet, pure, and beautiful in an honest way that a lot of other musicians can’t reach. This song is endearing personified.
  • Banana Pancakes: I love the story in this song. It’s just exactly what you’d want to do with someone you love, just to kind of show that you arrived to that point, that you don’t need to do anything with each other than lay around in the morning, make pancakes, and ignore the phone ringing. “Just so easy when the whole world fits inside of your arms.” Love it. This is the song that sold me on Jack Johnson.
