Songs of Note: India.Arie

by Sammi Dittloff on August 28th, 2007

There are so many songs that India.Arie has written that have deep words and deep meaning for me. She really has a talent for pairing powerful lyrics with sweeping melodies in order to form a more significant listening experience. However, there are a few that I love over others, so here is a list of ones you should pay special attention to…

  • Complicated Melody: There’s something about being able to describe everything about a person, from what color they would be or what kind of animal they are most like, that proves how much love is in the relationship. This song proves that although you could describe so many parts of a person, there’s one part that you can’t describe fully, and that’s the part that makes them a “complicated melody.” However, even if you can’t describe it, they can still be everything to you and more. “But if he were a song/He’d be a complicated melody, that/Complicated fellow, he/I almost cannot sing it on key/But he means the world to me.” This kind of song describes the relationship every person strives for, but it’s something intensely rare and special. Yes, this song has made me cry from time to time.
  • Heart of the Matter: I just had to plug this cover. I just had to. I really like India’s version of this song much better than the original. Plus, it’s always nice to listen to songs about break-ups. “I’ve been learning to live without you now/But I miss you sometimes/The more I know, the less I understand/All the things I thought I knew, I’m learning them again.” Something about starting over, it always sucks, but it’s something that has to happen. It’s definitely hard to have to learn to do things again, because when you’re in a relationship, you don’t have to worry as much about being your own person if you don’t want to. You don’t need a big support system, either, if your partner is someone who is there for you. Learning where to reach when you need help, learning how to be on your own, it’s never easy, and it never comes naturally. It’s what makes me love this song.
  • Private Party: I am a person that really has problems with doing things on my own. I never leave time for myself, so anytime I hear this song, it’s a peaceful reminder that I need to take time for things like that. “I’m having a private party/Ain’t nobody here but/Me, my angels, and my guitar singing/Baby, look how far we’ve come, yeah/I’m having a private party/Learning how to love me/Celebrate in the woman I’ve become.” For me, when I throw myself a “private party,” I like to sit somewhere peaceful with a journal and let the words come to me. It’s one of the best feelings in the world, and I definitely don’t allow myself enough time for it in general. This song has always provided great inspiration for me as far as how wonderful it can be to just do your own thing from time to time. Plus, it’s a good transition from “Heart of the Matter.”
  • Beautiful Surprise: I’m a person that holds the opinion that some of the best things in your life can come from completely out of nowhere. The things that surprise you can oftentimes be the most wonderful. That’s why I enjoy this song as much as I do. “Seems like yesterday, I didn’t even know your name/Now today, you’re always on my mind/I never could have predicted that I’d feel this way/You are a beautiful surprise.” Appearing as if in a dream, sometimes the best things in life happen when you’re neither prepared or looking. That’s what makes them so great. That’s what makes them relationships that have the possibility to withstand the tests of time. Beautiful surprises.

Aqualung is comin’ up soon, so don’t miss it!
