Songs of Note: Ari Herstand

by Sammi Dittloff on November 25th, 2007

So, dear readers, once again I have been exiled to the land of dial-up, and horrible Black Friday, Saturday, and the crazy shopping and traffic incidents that have ensued, have kept me from wandering much from my home on this fabled and infamous weekend of Thanksgiving. Never to fear, I have finally gotten the dial-up to work long enough to get a couple posts up, and although they are picture-less at the moment, they will be pizzazzed the moment that I have entered a wireless universe yet again. So, without further ado, I bring you Songs of Note. (Update: now with pictures! yay!)

  • Poster Boy Celebrity: So, I’m all for fast-talking singers. I have been ever since Jason Mraz thrilled me with this talent, which is why I think I’m so drawn to this song. Plus, it’s one of those “I’m not gonna be like everyone else or what everyone wants me to be” kind of song, and those are cool and empowering, and I can respect that.
  • A Smile: Correct me if I’m wrong, but what I get out of this song is the joys of simplicity, and when life gets complicated, it’s hard to get back to that simplicity. Sound good? The song starts talking about a mother and a little girl who’s got ice cream and is just simply blissful. Change the focus to a man with a fancy car and a fancy life and he can’t remember the last time he smiled or felt happiness. Something is off with that, but it’s quite the “money can’t buy you happiness” song. Word.
  • Float on By: I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve listened to this song. I know that I like it partly because of all the looping (just one guy, amazing) which ranges from his simple guitar, beat-boxing, and then trumpet. It’s so great, I can’t even describe to you how excited I get when I hear it, and it was seriously so much fun to watch when he did this at Summerfest, both times I went to see him. Also, the song itself is just so happy-go-lucky. Maybe it’s the word “float” that brings me to think of being on a lazy river in an inner tube, but yeah, just the most relaxing thoughts come to mind when I hear this song. Good times, fo sho.
