New Artist: Sondre Lerche

by Sammi Dittloff on January 23rd, 2008

  • Name of Artist: Sondre Lerche
  • Sound: When I hear Sondre Lerche, I think of Rufus Wainwright, Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens, and Robbie Williams, all rolled into one, but also add in some other characteristic sounds that are purely Sondre as well. I’ve seen on a few sites that they call it “Brit pop” and I guess that’s a pretty accurate description, but I feel a lot more depth in Sondre’s songs than, say, Robbie Williams. It’s definitely indie, but with pop sensibilities, so a wider range of people can enjoy listening to it, and not just the “I’m-gonna-get-this-because-I-love-indie-music” crowd. A very happy medium, indeed.

  • You May Remember Him From Such Songs As…: Well, if you’ve seen Dan in Real Life, congratulations, you’ve heard Sondre Lerche. He did almost the entire soundtrack, like the songs “Family Theme,” “My Hands are Shaking,” and a cover of “Let My Love Open the Door.” If you haven’t seen that movie, the songs “Modern Nature,” “Phantom Punch,” and “Two-Way Monologue” may be more familiar to you. If you haven’t heard of any of these songs before, see the movie or get on iTunes, and stop making excuses.
  • Next Performance: February 27th in Bergen, Norway

Like I said the other day, I first found out about Sondre Lerche through my boyfriend, and since he’s more of a listener of metal and hair bands and all that good stuff, I wasn’t totally convinced that I would like Sondre Lerche, but he gave me a guarantee that I would love him, even saying that I would love him more than Sufjan Stevens. It was on. It was totally on. I had to listen to this guy if he told me I’d like him more than the indie dynamo that plays every instrument in the world. Now, I’m not saying that I like Lerche better than Stevens, since there are a lot of differences between them, but let me tell you, I was totally impressed. Sondre Lerche has really catchy tunes, that are definitely more appealing to the mainstream than some indie bands and artists I listen to, but still, he’s got that thing that when you listen to it you feel totally cool and elitist in a way. (Yeah, sorry, I like feeling like an elitist. I’m sharing, so that’s a big step forward for me.) His voice is also, well, incredibly sexy. My favorite song right now is probably “Two-Way Monologue” and it’s mostly because I like songs that start slow and then speed up. It’s a great car ride song, and I loves me my car ride songs, since I’m driving all the time. Anyway, I’m starting to babble, so I’ll have more on him coming up soon. (I know, I’m playing catch-up this week, I’m very sorry!)
