New Artist Monday: The Sounds

- Name of Band: The Sounds
- Sound: They have several. Didn’t you see the title? Hehe…okay…I’m lame….anyway….The Sounds definitely have that “New Wave” vibe to them, since they’re extremely synth-tastic, and everything about them screams 80’s, but then there’s something about them that when you listen, you know that they aren’t from the 80’s. They sound modern enough that it comes off as innovative instead of “already been done.” It might have something to do with Maja’s voice. It’s so original and indie that you know it had to be something that was discovered just recently, it’s that precious. By the way, Maja’s voice is probably my favorite female voice I’ve heard thus far….like anywhere….as a front to a band. So, maybe I’m partial, but without her, The Sounds wouldn’t be half as great in my mind.
- Location: Helsingborg, Sweden
- Band Members:
- Maja Ivarsson - Vocals
- Felix Rodriguez - Guitar
- Johan Bengtsson - Bass
- Jesper Anderberg - Synth
- Fredrik Nilsson - Drums

- MySpace: myspace.com/thesounds
- You May Remember Them From Such Songs As…: “Tony the Beat”…I heard that on some MTV thing and also I think like the movie Just My Luck or something like that. So, I’m guessing, if you’re like a majority of America, you may have heard that song. Otherwise “Seven Days A Week” may be familiar to you, or “Hit Me,” my favorite song of theirs of my life, to which I own a shirt. I can’t think of any others now, as they aren’t overly mainstream on American radio, but those are some pretty hit-like tracks, fer sure.
- Next Performance: May 10 in Orebro, Sweden. I know, a long way off, but I guess we’ll all have to wait.
It was quite a few years back when I first heard The Sounds, but as soon as I found out about them from Spin Magazine….hmm, I’m trying to remember, I’m sure that was at least like 4 years ago…I went out and bought a CD. I was in love with Living in America instantly, especially the fact that there were three bonus videos that you could watch on your computer, including the one for Hit Me, which cost them a couple hundred bucks since they filled it in someone’s empty pool. I just prayed some day that I would get to see them, and I did, shortly after they released their second album, Dying to Say This To You, and it was everything I hoped for and more. Maja was everything I wanted her to be in person, just a fantastic performer, on pitch, and the exact opposite of disappointing. It was one of my favorite concerts I’ve ever seen, and I’m just hoping someday that when they make their way back to the US, I’ll get a chance to see Maja and the boys again.
To share your experience with seeing this band, post here!!! Wait for more features later in the week…

I love the Sounds. I’ve seen them live in a very small venue (Rave Bar) and it was fantastic. Definitely GO if you get the chance, although I’m sure by now they’re playing bigger venues (boo hoo). I danced ALL night.
