New Artist Monday: The Fratellis

by Sammi Dittloff on September 17th, 2007

Woahmygosh, stop the presses, it’s the first time in a long time that I’ve been able to actually blog on Monday! Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: The Fratellis!

  • Name of Band: The Fratellis
  • Members:
    • John Lawler (Jon Fratelli) - vocals/guitar
    • Barry Wallace (Barry Fratelli) - bass guitar
    • Gordon McRory (Mince Fratelli) - drums/backing vocals/guitar/banjo
  • Sound: Fun, funky, somewhat fictitious rock ‘n rolling band hailing from around the same area that all these post-punk old school-ish bands seem to be coming from nowadays. Easygoing rock that likes to have a good time, not as much about social commentary as some other bands or about the street urchin-y life, but more just about lovable stoners, pretty girls, that sort of thing.
  • Location: Glasgow, Scotland
  • Website: www.thefratellis.com
  • MySpace: myspace.com/littlebabyfratelli
  • You May Remember Them From Such Songs As…: “Flathead,” a little song that played on an iPod commercial. Ergo, everyone has heard the song. Although I’d like to sound cooler than this, I’m not gonna lie, it’s the first time I ever heard their music and went, “Wow, I like that. That’s fun. I want to know who plays that and listen to all their songs.” So, sometimes commercialism isn’t a bad thing. It gets you out there…and what better way to do it than iPod?
  • Next Performance: Nothing planned right now……*sob*

Sadly, there’s not much I found out about this band, except how much their music has been used in other formats, but that’s something I talk about later in the week. So, yeah, I’m not sure exactly what to say, except perhaps talk about my experience with The Fratellis this summer.

This is the band that I listened to my entire summer. I mean it. My. Entire. Summer. I can’t tell you how many times I danced around my room in pin-up clothes pretending to be the girls in “Flathead.” There’s something so appealing to me about bands that call back to the 50’s in some way or another, and although a lot of people keep the sound, these guys keep the image up, with cute pin-up girls in their videos, on their album and DVD covers, and all over their website. This is something that actually kept me interested, believe it or not.

In a way, it seemed almost wholesome, which is so funny, because at the time, pin-up models were extremely racy. In today’s age, it just seems so charming. There’s an element of simplicity to it that I just love, and the music carries this to that level as well. It’s just so easy to bop around to, and although some of the lyrics are a little questionable, the music is something that I’d imagine myself dancing around to with the children I babysit. (Yeah, maybe “Vince The Lovable Stoner” isn’t the best choice, but “Flathead” could definitely work).

I guess what I’m trying to write about here is my experience with The Fratellis. They’re just that band I can listen to any time and not think too much about. They’re there for enjoyment and cheering up, and nothing gets complicated. If you wanna post why you listen to The Fratellis here, feel free!

My boyfriend is a huge Fratellis fan, so I was introduced to them a while ago. Then I heard Flathead and was like, oh yeah….lol They’re catchy.

My kids like it, too. We finally agree on music ;)
