Four Songs You Need….Today!
So, honestly, if you haven’t read my blog in the past…whatever, you need to read today to find out about four of the most-played songs in my life that pretty much follow after a break-up. I’m at Vampire Weekend’s emotional level right now…although I started at Amy Winehouse. Let me take you from sad to mad…..to absolutely over-the-moon happy!
- Amy Winehouse: “Back to Black”
Sad as all get-out. “He only said goodbye with words/I died a hundred times/You go back to her/And I go back to black.” It’s a good bummer song to belt to, believe me. “So far removed from all that we went through.” Like, not taking the time to remember the good times makes me really frustrated with a guy, you know? How can he not see that good things happened, just because bad things are going on in that smaller more isolated time? It’s what got me from sad to furiously frustrated….which brings me to…
- Ludo: “Good Will Hunting By Myself”
“It’s okay that you haven’t called me in a week or two/I’m sure it’s hard for you, it’s been hard for me too.” This song has kind of a sad/angry vibe to it, where he starts out pretty sad, but by the end he starts ranting, and that’s where it gets really good…”Listen you tanning bed-baked, broke-ass, goat-faced oompa loompa monkey problem, I am proud to shop at Target! I will wear warm-up pants any day of the week! Yes, your ass did look fat in those jeans, your mom is a MILF, and I plan to get on your little sister just as soon as I give her a call back!” I really enjoy that it goes from crying to ranting…it’s really how it always is. Incredibly cathartic.
- Ben Folds Five: “Song for the Dumped”
“Give me my money back/Give me my money back, you bitch/I want my money back/And don’t forget/To give me back my black t-shirt/I wish I hadn’t/Bought you dinner/Right before you/Dumped me on your front porch.” Okay, so this song is like semi-mad semi-upbeat, but I mean, it’s honestly how I felt right afterwards. Like, hey, I wasted all this time and money on you, and this is how you repay me? Screw you! Gotta love the way that Ben Folds does anger, so passive-aggressive, so much like a girl. Totally perfect. Embedding was disabled for this, so here is the link.
- Vampire Weekend: “A-Punk”
Honestly the happiest song I have ever listened to in my life. If you don’t know this song, it very well could be a crime. To get from Amy Winehouse to Vampire Weekend in less than a week, however, is the opposite of a crime…it’s a dream come true. You can start off in black and white, in a dark parlor wishing that things were different and can come out into the sunlight with its warmth shining down on you and everything feeling perfect and beautiful. It is possible. I believe I have proven this through my musical progression. You can thank me later, as always.
