Artist Update: Albert Hammond Jr.’s 2nd Album!!

It was way back in the genesis of 52 Bands that I wrote about Albert Hammond Jr. (Seriously, I looked it up today and it was way back in July, it doesn’t feel that long at all!) I also posted an update in December about him coming out with a second CD, something I was more than pumped about. Well, dear readers, the time has come, and Albert Hammond Jr.’s second album, Como Te Llama, (meaning, “What’s Your Name?”) is coming out on Tuesday, June 8th! You best believe I’ll be getting a copy…just as soon as my check comes on Friday. However, I won’t be in a Hammond drought for too long, since I can listen to all his tracks free on his MySpace until I have a copy in my oh-so-coveted possession.
Taking advantage of this golden opportunity, some favorites have already arisen from previewing the tracks. “GfC” and “G Up” are definitely the frontrunners thus far. “G Up” is so upbeat and sunny, something I kinda got hooked on with Vampire Weekend’s CD, not gonna lie, while “GfC” is much more reminiscent of his initially successful style, kind of like “Call an Ambulance.” Kind of.
“The Boss Americana” has a Strokes feel to it in the intro, most def, along with “Victory at Monterey”, that really sparse guitar riff that just reeks of coolness. Never to fear, he’s got plenty of sounds that separate him from his former New York garagey repuatation as well. Of course, he’s already separated himself enough from The Strokes as it is. I’m just glad he didn’t fall back into an old standby sound. He’s definitely staying true to himself and the vision of what his music should be.
So, in a nutshell, Como te Llama is a lot like Yours to Keep, and then some. In a lot of ways, the album is more sophisticated and “meaty” than Yours to Keep. The sound is more diverse between tracks, so all in all, I’d say it was a great sophomore success, something that haunts a lot of bands and artists. Heck, “Borrowed Time” even has a reggae feel to it, which I see as taking a risk after being initially successful. Good on ya, Albert.
My one disappointment? No Buddy Holly cover. Sad day.
